As Black opened the door
and White rushed out,
it was profoundly and sadly clear:
No one is in hell by accident.
Every eternal resident has made a clear choice.
Why do they rush forth, headstrong
while we servants of Love
mourn their final decisions?
White was repeatedly dumbfounded by Black’s choice of dismal living conditions among such hopeless tenants and yet those were exactly the eternal conditions to which he was determined to jump.
For those who believe, this life on earth – no matter how good – is as bad as it gets.
And for those who won’t believe, this life on earth – no matter how bad – is as good as it gets.
If anyone is looking for something to rent or borrow this weekend – especially those hunkering down in the frozen North – check out The Sunset Limited. I found it at my local library.

I felt so much sorrow watching the trailers/excerpts. I know people like that, in fact it makes me think of my brother who passed at 50 a couple years ago (we don’t know how)

I’m very sorry for your loss. And I am very sorry and sad for any despair that your brother might have felt.
The professor in the movie was a bit frustrating: for most of the movie I had compassion for the despair that was all over his weary face, but I was also frustrated by his stubborn unwillingness, over all those miserable years, to just humble himself and reach up to God for a hand out of the mire.
The rage he displayed at the end of the movie erased a lot of my compassion for him. I hoped, for his fictional sake, that he understood what he was choosing.

Just watch the trailer, not the final scene, if you are going to watch the movie.

TRB. I’m glad you watched it and posted. Both actors were tremendous. I thought I was getting a mystery by the same name. Little did I know. A simple thankful faith in one corner. The vanity of Ecclesiastes in the other. The result? God’s mercy and His judgment will both be justified and applauded…Doug. (Congrats to Tommy Lee on his direction.) The playwrite Cormac McCarthy always shakes us up with his writing (The Road, The Crossing)
