My Life in Song

He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother came out when I was nine years old.  It was my first favorite song and it has always been so me:

At times my life has felt charmed and at times it has felt like the challenges would kill me.  But through all the highs and lows, joys and sorrows there has been a Sweet Glow of Mercy:

My daughter and I were talking about music recently.  When I was young, I listened to it all the time.  It taught me about life and it helped me identify my emotions.  It was the soundtrack to many happy and heartbreaking events.

I rarely listen to it now.  Perhaps because I don’t need it anymore now that I am older and I have my life and my emotions sorted out. When I do occasionally listen – when I’m on the treadmill and when I’m on a road trip – I like songs that bring back memories. They don’t teach me about life anymore, they just remind me of all I’ve lived.

But this song, though I rarely listen to it anymore, still runs pretty regularly through my head:

Oh Lord, You’re Beautiful,
Your face is all I seek.
For when Your eyes are on this child,
Your grace abounds to me.

I want to take Your word and shine it all around
but first help me just to live it, Lord
and when I’m doing well help me
to never seek a crown
for my reward is bringing
glory to You…”

(The live version is a little different than the recorded version.)

Comment here and have no fear. If you regret it or change your mind, just let me know. I will be happy to delete it. (Unless it's about how brilliant I am, then it stays.)
